The 1909 edition begins with the following

NOTE

This edition of Religio Medici and Digby's Observations is printed from copies lent by Professor William Osler. The text of Religio follows that of the first authentic edition of 1643, page for page and line for line. To preserve identity of reference the errors of pagination (pp. 171 and 172 are duplicated) and section-numbering have been left undisturbed.

The text has been corrected from the Errata page of the original; a few obvious misprints, not there noticed, have also been removed [and are noted below; numbered notes in the text lead to this list].

In this on-line edition, each page is provided with an "a href", so that you may go to a certain page by attaching "#page number" to the end of the URL: thus, to go to page 101, you would simply add "#page101" to the URL as it appears; i.e., http://penelope.uchicago.edu/relmed/relmed.html#page101, and so on. Because pages numbered 171 and 172 occur twice, the second occurrence of each page is referenced by a: #171a and #172a. The word that is the anchor is the first word on the page. When page breaks occur in the middle of a word, this is noted in the source: e.g., "<--pre- 12 sent-->".

Sections are likewise linked: relmed.html#sect21 will go to Part I, section 21; relmed.html#2sect5 will go to Part II, section 5. Note the errors in numbering the sections; the result is that there are two each of sections 35, 46, and Part II section 15; these are called "sect35bis", "sect46bis", and "2sect15bis". There is no Part II section 10. These misnumberings persisted through several editions, although all had been repaired by the 1672 edition.

Catch-words are not noted, nor are printers' marks, gathering numbers, etc. Long esses are, unfortunately but of necessity, rendered by short esses. Browne's original marginal notes are reproduced at the bottoms of sections Referents have been supplied where they are missing. The Errata page is also supplied, although, as mentioned above, its corrections have been incorporated in the text (and the absence of hard line breaks will make it difficult to ascertain precisely where).

The text referred to in the opening Epistle, Digby's Observations upon Religio Medici, is here.

Keck's Annotations, which accompanied all 17th editions after they were written, are referred to in the text as links of the form: K1.
